The new Mampaey Dynamic Oval Towing (DOT) system is a 360 degree all around towing system. The DOT-system integrates the towing points for sailing ahead and astern into one system. The system adds safety, controllability and, above all, flexibility to the performance of tugs enabling them to rotate in all directions in a safe and controlled manner irrespective of the heading of the assisted vessel. In exposed conditions this capability will always allow the tug to meet waves safely with bow forward. In confined spaces assisting vessels is much safer because with the 360° all-round towing system the tugs’ full power is available in any direction. Tug operators are constantly facing a dilemma between ever increasing assistance speeds and the safety of the tug and crew. The DOT system solves this dilemma and makes towing at low and higher speeds safe and controlled. When towing sideways the tug the likeliness of capsizing is reduced. The optimal balance achieved by the oval shape minimizes the need of propulsion power to control the tug. Significant improvement is offered in ship assistance and the safety of crew and vessel is assured.
The system consists of an oval shaped rail integrated in the ships’ structure with free moving carriages on the rail supporting the towing hook. The system can be easily integrated with various new and existing tug designs and deck lay-outs. The DOT system is available in a 15 Tons and 30 Tons Safe Working Load version. The first system is in operation in Scotland on a 13m harbour tug designed by Macduff Ship Design. Convince yourself here. Click here for the brochure. |
