One off the largest projects of Mampaey Offshore Industries of this year for VALE in São Luís Brazil is commissioned by our team in Brazil.
This year Mampaey Offshore Industries supplied the complete Mooring System. This consists of seventeen Quick Release Mooring Units (five triple Quick Release Mooring Hook units and twelve quadruple Quick Release Mooring Hook units, all with safe working load of 150 tons), a Berthing Approach System and an Environmental Monitoring System.
The units are installed on the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal in São Luís Brazil. This is the largest iron ore terminal in Brazil in terms of cargo volume. The newest Pier IV, has a water depth of 25 metres, a 1.6-km access bridge quay and two berths – the South berth and the North berth. This Pier IV accommodates the world’s largest ore carriers, Valemaxes. They can carry up to 400,000 metric tons. The port achieved 112 million tons and this figure propelled the terminal to the top of the national ranking in 2014.
The North Pier IV has an embarkation line and ship loader of the Duo Quadrant-type, with a capacity of 16,000 metric tons per hour. The pier is able to load two vessels of up to 400,000 deadweight tonnes simultaneously. This kind of maneuver represents an operating strategy to ensure greater productivity. This maneuver enables one ship to unmoor while another one docks during the same low or high tide window of opportunity.
